Rejection Letters, Critique Circle, Getting Published and Something Special -- by Keith Rommel

The rejection letters were not easy to take but there had to be a reason why I kept getting them. Although I didn’t want to accept it, my manuscript was unready and so was I.

I began a frantic search for a way to find likeminded people with varying degrees of experience willing to give it to me straight. Yeah, I had friends that looked over my writing, but I needed something more. I needed substance.

In October 2006, I happened upon the Critique Circle and immediately joined the community. Within a week, I was critiquing and receiving critiques that would become instrumental in honing my skills and helping me reach publication for my dark suspense novel The Cursed Man.

After dozens of critiques and multiple rewrites, I signed a publishing agreement in December 2010. The Cursed Man went through the editing process and was released in March 2011.

Fast-forward to October 2011. I received an email from film producer James L. Perry and he expressed his interest in turning the book into a movie. In January 2013 The Cursed Man was announced as being under production as a feature film with such talent as Robert Picardo (Star Trek), Troy Mittleider (24), Maritza Brikisak (The Young and the Restless), Brahm Gallagher, Cassandra Vincent and James L. Perry (producer).

I often recognize publicly how important the Critique Circle has been for me in articles, interviews and radio appearances. It is essential for other writers to understand what I gained and what is available to them. This is a great place to learn and grow, and I hope you take full advantage of the talent around you like I did. I am a firm believer that if I had not joined the CC, my book would never have been published. smiley

About The Cursed Man:

Alister Kunkle believes death is in love with him.  A simple smile from friend or stranger is all it takes to encourage death to kill.

With his family deceased and a path of destruction behind him, Alister sits inside a mental institution, sworn to silence and separated from the rest of the world, haunted by his inability to escape death’s preferential treatment.

But when a beautiful psychologist arrives at the institution and starts offering him care, Alister braces himself for more killings.  When none follow, he tries to figure out whether he truly is insane or if death has finally come to him in the form of a woman. Alister Kunkle believes death is in love with him.  A simple smile from friend or stranger is all it takes to encourage death to kill.

Hey Keith,

Congrats on the film being 'in production'! I know that is a huge milestone in Hollywood terms.

You are the reason I found CC a few months ago, and I agree completely - it's made a huge difference in the quality of my writing. I've checked out a few other crit sites since finding CC, and none of them compare.

We miss seeing you at our monthly writer's group here on the Treasure Coast but I know you are incredibly busy.

Best of luck with future book sales and I can't wait to see the movie!

Sheri,

It's really good to hear you're making good use of the CC. I don't want to bore you with the details, but I'll be back with the group shortly.
