I'm only halfway through this incredibly helpful book, and I already wish I'd read it before I wrote my novel. It's okay, though. I'm being validated for the things I did right while being nudged to fix the things that didn't satisfy me. With tons of examples, and clearly stated explanations, James Scott Bell eases you toward the truth. There ARE required elements for a novel. By the time you admit you could have done a better job, he lets you know it can be fixed...no matter what. The exercises and ways to fix it are fun, doable, and logical. Best of all they work, and get your creativity flowing. I highly recommend this book.
