HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. 'I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will.' Bronte's infamous Gothic novel tells the story of orphan Jane, a child of unfortunate circumstances. Raised and treated badly by her aunt and cousins and eventually sent away to a cruel boarding school, it is not until Jane becomes a governess at Thornfield that she finds happiness. Meek, measured, but determined, Jane soon falls in love with her brooding and stormy master, Mr Rochester, but it is not long before strange and unnerving events occur in the house and Jane is forced to leave Thornfield to pursue her future.

Jane Eyre was written by Charlotte Bronte, who unfortunately, often fell in the shadow of another famous female author at the time: Jane Austen. When time is taken to discover the intricate and thoughtful development of this story, it becomes quite clear that Charlotte Bronte was a literary genius. Her descriptions and character development are impeccable. While the beginning of the book may be considered by some to slow the progression of the plot, further study will show just how vital each detail of her childhood become. Without hardship, she could not have experienced the indescribable joy of finding the man who completed her existence. This book contains desperate characters who are each held captive by their personal vision of morality, and it is this desperation that fuels the plot and holds the reader captive for many a happy hour. Enjoy the book!!!

I read this because it is deemed to be a great piece of literature. A book that an aspiring writer should read. I didn't expect to enjoy it but I was surprised. A wonderful story told by a master storyteller.

One of the many books that inspired my love of reading and romance. A must-read classic. I've seen two or three film versions, and can't wait for the newest.
