Rewriting CC [Part 3] - We need your help -- by Jon Bjarnason

Rewriting a website from the ground up that is as old and as big as Critique Circle is not going to be easy and it is not going to be cheap.

As a rough estimate the total work involved will be somewhere between 100 and 300 man-hours and during the transition (which will be a number of months) our operating expenses might double since we will be running two stacks side by side.

If you haven't already, take a look at the previous two blogs about the rewrite here and here. To discuss the rewrite or ask questions you can use this forum thread.

We are asking for your help in the form of a one-time donation to the cause. We realize many of you already have premium subscriptions that you have paid good money for and we appreciate that. If you can spare a few dollars more for this project it will be deeply appreciated.

Please use the donate button at the top of the page if you can help out. You can also use this link. The form has three preset quantities but you can donate as much or as little as you want. Every dollar helps.

As a small token of gratitude all those that donate will get a special cc benefactor icon next to their username which will remain there until the website rewrite has been completed.

Thank you very much for your continued support throughout this endevour. Together we can do it!

My Paypal account is Japanese, and they don't allow "donations" from Japan. (Which is idiotic of them.) Any other ways of donating?

Hah, that's peculiar. You can also make a direct paypal payment to critiquecircle@critiquecircle.com if that works. Just let us know afterwards so that we can add the benefactor icon to your account.

So, probably a dumb question here, but what is the end goal, financially speaking? Is there like a dollar amount tied to how much it will take to get the new site up and running or is it more ongoing, use what is needed for expenses when the time comes? If it was mentioned before I may have scanned over it and just want to throw that question out there if not.

Have you considered doing a Kickstater campaign? It sounds like a serious project and a Kickstater campaign might take the burden of updating people and tracking accountability off your to-do list. A side-benefit is that it might catch the eye of writers who never managed to find Critique Circle and of non-writers who would understand the downstream benefits Critique Circle provides to readers.

Hello. Is there a way to contribute $ in NZD instead of US? I'm from New Zealand.

Yeah, I briefly considered it, but kickstarter doesn't allow Icelandic campaigns. There are other similar sites out there, but in the end I decided to just plead with my members here.

The donations are done through paypal and you can use your own credit card. Just calculate the difference so you know what it will amount to in NZD on your next bill.

Well... I guess this is it. Feel like we should all have a round of hugs and champaign. See you all on the other side...

Good luck on the rewriting process. When I get a job, I'll donate as much as I can for this writing site. It's really amazing! I hope to see the improved version soon
