What can one person say about a book telling the story of rats (repulsive to most people) evolving and preying on humans for their next feed in abundant force -from woman and man to child.

The story was engrossing from the prologue to the final page. James Herbert has a way of balancing story with action - often like an 80's horror story correctly executed - without letting you leave the edge of your seat once. I was enthralled by the brilliantly descriptive full-detail scenes of infant massacres caused by floods of rats as dogs bark frantically to protect them and mother becomes catatonic from the aftermath. All of this just being one of many brilliant paragraphs.

There is no doubt that James Herbert started the series of books off brilliantly with The Rats and my well be the best book in the three book series in my opinion.
