DescriptionAnother outline format shamelessly ripped from the First Draft in 30 Days book by Karen S. Wiesner. It's really not a book about writing an actual first draft in 30 days a la NaNoWriMo, but rather a book about how to make a really detailed outline in 30 days. So, it has lots of great outline formats, of which, this is one.

The purpose of this one is to lock down what the main plot threads will be- in a general way. The next outline (Story Evolution) is where you'll fill in details. Here just make sure that each field includes the characters involved, and a 1-3 sentence summary of the plot thread.
Plot Threads
STORY GOAL (what all characters are trying to achieve/prevent, or the main concept/ theme the characters explore)
*Optional* ROMANCE THREAD (main relationship)
SUBPLOTS (plots that run parallel to or contrast the "Story Goal")
PLOT TENSION (bad things that happen to prevent characters from reaching Story Goal.)
*Optional* ROMANTIC TENSION (plot threads that hint/suggest that two characters are attracted to each other)
RELEASE easement of "Plot Tension". Time for backstory/exposition, or a time for characters to achieve part/all of a goal.)
DOWNTIME (type of Release occuing at moment of extreem tension. Character given time to reflect/think of what to do next.)
BLACK MOMENT (climax, the worst thing that could happen, happens)
RESOLUTION (the tying up of the story's main conflict/goal.)
CLEAN UP (other threads are tied-up or left hanging as you see fit.)
